An honor for The Empire of Ice Cream

The Horror Writers Association has named Jeffrey Ford's book The Empire of Ice Cream among this year's Stoker Award nominees, in the Fiction Collection category. The winners will be announced March 31 at the World Horror Convention in Toronto.

Which stories in Ford's book, if any, would you consider horror stories? (In addition to whatever other genres they may fit, of course.)

I think that The Green Word has parts that are a bit frightening. Its very fantastical, but its also pretty bloody. I picture Vertuminus having a frightening stature, sort of like Pan in Pan's Labyrinth. When the King opens his eyes after the Red Knight is slain and Vertuminus then kneels before him, I can see the suspense leading up to the kneeling being quite horrifc in any movie theater.

I guess Boatman's Holiday could be a horror story.

You could make an argument for a good number of them, really. Jupiter's Skull had it's freaky moments, especially with the characters assuming the same few roles, Botch Town had some pretty disturbing characters and events. The ending of Man of Light was pretty horror-worthy, as was The Empire of Ice Cream, given how the main character sort of ceases to exist. Most of the stories kind of have that twist ending that gives you a bit of a chill. I guess it just depends on your definition.
