Interesting Fact Nugget

With all the mention of actual historic events in this novel...it is no wonder that Suzanna Clarke would include a fairy kingdom named after a place she once lived...from wikipedia: "At one point in the book, reference is made to the Faerie kingdom of Pity-Me. This is in fact a real place in County Durham, North East England. Clarke was living in County Durham in 1992, when she started writing the novel."

Definitely not something I expected to turn out to be real

Oh, well, once you run out of made-up names...

Actually, I think it's weirder that there's a place in England named "Pity-Me." What on earth would make someone name a place that?

Wow, that really is interesting..I figured it would just be made up like the rest. The person that named it must have been depressed.

it's also kinda necessary to balance all that historical fiction with the fantastical realm that still has some connexion to the real world. helps keep things grounded :)

Too true. She really does have parallel history thing going on here. How funny it is that one of the things you would almost certainly write off as being a part of her own imagination...is actually a real place. How horrible it would be to live there, though.

As if having one place named this isn't weird enough, apparently there are several. Along with lots of other strangely-named English towns. XD I wouldn't have expected it to be a real place, either--it's one of those surprising little details you don't expect. It makes me wonder what anybody from that area thought when they came across the name in the book, because surely they would have recognized it right off, unlike us who had to look it up.
