The Mushroom Duchess

I think my favortie out of this week's readings would have to be "The Mushroom Duchess". It read like a Grimm's fairy tale with its once-upon-a-time feel. It related to "Walpurgis Afternoon" with its "practical" approach to magic. The Duchess derived her powers from her scientific knowledge and manipulation of nature, and that seemed to be what was going on with the witches in "Walpurgis Afternoon". Any thoughts?

i liked the mushroom duchess in every way except the way she was able to manipulate the people around her so easily. everyone else knew that they shouldn't drink tea with teh duchess, so why was her son and daughter in law so ignorant?

I think the son was just a dumbass and the daughter-in-law was a new comer and didn't know the whole story surrounding the Duchess and her tea.

I really liked your Grimm comment. The Mushroom Duchess in combination with the true Grimm tales reminded me of the Grimm version of Cinderella where the evil stepmother and stepsisters were attacked by crows and had their eyes pecked out. yay!!
