Miyazaki on Spirited Away
The Nausicaa fan site's section on Spirited Away has a useful essay by writer-director Hayao Miyazaki and a useful Q&A with him, both linked from this page. Among other things, Miyazaki talks about how he makes use of Japanese folklore.

Miyazaki said he write the story for his 5 young female friends that he spends time with in the summers. I remember reading that Alice's Adventures in Wonderland were likewise inspired by a group (three I think) of young girls- including on enamed Alice.
Alice was a real girl and she had two sisters. They were the daughters of the dean of Christ Church College (the college Lewis Carroll/Charles Dodgson attended).
