Spirited Away

So, I was wondering what everyone (who has seen it) thought of Spirited Away. Zach said that it has been called a japanese Alice in Wonderland. I am a huge Alice fan. It is full of word play and sly references to real life events...I was wondering if anyone was familiar with Japanese folk lore, and if there was any word play or hidden references in Spirited Away? It would be terribly interesting to know.

I don't know, but I did notice how much Spirited Away seemed to fit in with nick's paper topic. The male lead is a "river spirit." He's kind, noble, helpful, etc. Saved a girl's life . . . twice. Hmm. Water in Fantasy anyone?

A lot of fantasy seems to have strong connections to either classical Greek (Earth, Air, Fire, Water, usually) or Chinese (Wood, Metal, Fire, Water, Earth) elements. I think, at least with the Greek, water's the easiest to access. Any connections to earth or air would have to be either really vague and hard to recognize or so vast as to hit you over the head with the reference repeatedly. And fire's usually reserved for destruction or purification. I don't really know about how the Chinese elements fit into that, though.

good point keith...although in my paper i went the route of how the people in contact with water changes the way it reacts to them...but come to think of it...the way Chihiro is always in Hatu's (I think thats his name) corner does effect his willingness to help her get her parents back in my opinion. Just finished my paper by the way...Sweet!
