Video Games?

I think that video games are increasingly becoming a larger party of the fantasy genre. In a way, they are more enjoyable than either a book or movie because of their interactivity and your ability to add to the story. Some of the noteable ones that I own and play are...

  • The Final Fantasy Series (Perfect tale of Magic & Swords)
  • Zelda (Another timeless tale of Magic & Swords, and probably my favorite fantasy tale)
  • Warcraft (One of the most popular games on earth where you get to choose Magic OR Sword OR a combination of both, and that over 10 million people currently play)
  • Devil May Cry (A More modern Fantasy, involving Magic & Gun)
  • Fable (Another customizable fantast tale)
Does anyone else feel that video games are becoming more and more important in the fantasy genre? And what games do you folks think exemplify the fantasy genre?

I totally agree with you. The video games are more fun because you get to pretend that your actually able to do all of the magical stuff. They are also really easy to get addicted to. Basically all of the games are fantasy because of all of the mythical settings, events, and powers the characters have in them.

Video Games are very much so becoming a HUGE part of the fantasy field. They add to the genre the amazing ability for players to dictate the course of events for themselves. This allows for a much broader scope for the fantasy genre. Video games also allow people to become part of the genre without really needing the capability to write fantastic books or produce movies and the like. One very good instance of this is Gary's Mod for the best-selling game Half-Life. Gary's mod was programmed by some guy to let people play with the realm of physics and the fantastic. For example, if you put bread and a toaster together, you get toast; however, if you put a toaster and a can of spray paint, you might come out with a great flamethrower or something. It's up to the player to decide.
